Explore the best Santorini beaches

Blessed by the ancient Greek Gods and by nature, Santorini boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Splendid beaches and dramatic scenery characterize the coastline of this volcanic gem where beachgoers can explore colorful sands, crystalline waters, and the other-worldly beauty of the volcanic rocky landscape. This popular summer holiday destination has something for everybody. Whether you’re seeking a secluded spot, a vibrant cosmopolitan area, or a place for practicing water sports, Santorini will not disappoint!

Here is our guide to the top Santorini beaches for you to enjoy and make the most out of your Greek vacation.

1. Red Beach – Scenic Volcanic Landscape

The world-famous Red Beach is a true feast for the eyes. The striking contrast between the red volcanic rocks and the azure waters is truly captivating. This pristine coastline is situated about 8km from Fira, near the Akrotiri archaeological site.

The Red Beach is considered one of the best snorkeling spots in the Cyclades. The transparent turquoise sea invites everyone who likes to explore the underwater world. If you visit with small children though, you should be aware that the shore deepens rather quickly here.

2. White Beach – Wild Beauty and Tranquillity

One of the most impressive landscapes of Santorini, the White Beach is surrounded by dramatic white cliffs that tower over the pebbly shore. Access is only possible by the sea from the Vlychada Bay or from Amoudi Bay where you can take a Santorini sailing cruise to visit this picturesque site.

Dotted with a couple of sunbeds and umbrellas, White Beach has a calm and relaxed vibe.

Spread out your beach towel and settle in for a front-row view of the magnificent Santorini sunset!

3. Kamari Beach – Black Lava and Lively Atmosphere

Covered by black volcanic sand, this organized beach is located on the eastern coast of the island.

Adorned with an enormous rock called the Mesa Vouno, Kamari Beach offers a spectacular view. This picture-perfect plage has a plethora of shops and taverns. You can take a nice stroll on the long parallel promenade after a delicious seafood lunch. The sea is deep and clean here, which makes it ideal for snorkeling.

If you are in the mood for beach-hopping you can take a “shuttle boat” to find yourself at the nearby Perissa Beach.

4. Perissa Beach – Fun and family-friendly

Situated 11.7 km southeast of Fira, Perissa is a fantastic location for families with small children. It is a fully organized cosmopolitan beach with a long strip of black lava sand. Perissa offers an abundance of amenities such as lifeguard services, showers, playgrounds, and even a cool water park with three water slides.

You can unwind on a cozy sun lounger or taste local dishes at the traditional taverns. Several seaside cafes await the visitors for a relaxing iced coffee or a summary fruit cocktail. You should not miss Perissa during your Santorini holiday!

5. Ammoudi Beach – Cliff Jumping with Caldera View

In order to reach this secret spot, you will have to walk down 235 cobblestoned steps from the picturesque Oia village, but it is well worth the effort (you can also take a taxi/car to Ammoudi Bay, and then walk by all the fish taverns to reach the rocky beach). Ammoudi Beach is not a typical beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, but more like a fragment of the wild, rocky, volcanic coast. What’s so unique about it then? Swim over to the small rocky island opposite the beach (it takes just a couple of laps) and you will get to admire the best views of the Santorini caldera! The islet also homes a tiny white church called Agios Nikolaos. Underneath the church, you will find a concrete platform from which adventurous swimmers love to jump to the crystal clear waters. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

+1 Perivolos Beach – Nightlife and Adventure

Composed of black lava sand, this lively south-eastern spot is a much-loved destination among couples and a popular location to hold beach wedding ceremonies.

It’s also a perfect beach for watersport enthusiasts who can enjoy jet skiing, windsurfing, and even scuba diving in the azure waters.

From volleyball courts to the best Santorini beach bars, Perivolos is humming with events and activities. If you are looking for a vibrant beach with cheerful vibes and upbeat tunes, head to Perivolos! The fun begins at midday and goes on until the early hours.
